Artificial Intelligence is disrupting every conceivable sector, and the field of cybersecurity is no exception. By virtue of functionalities such as threat detection, malware analysis, and automated incident response, AI brings about speed, intelligence, and efficiency in the quest for securing computer systems. However, paradoxically, the question about the redundancy of human cybersecurity professionals in light of the advent of AI MUST be addressed. This blog post looks into the relevance of AI in the realm of cybersecurity.
Artificial Intelligence has dramatically emerged as a disruptive force in the field of cybersecurity, completing tasks that would otherwise be very challenging and even time-consuming for human intervention alone. The application of AI in cybersecurity is important in threat detection and analysis, as it scans massive traffic on the network and looks for anomalies in real-time, usually even before a human can. Artificial Intelligence is important in instant incident response actions, such as the isolation of infected devices and the blocking of malicious activity. There is an application in predictive security, which enables machine learning to analyse previously considered threat patterns to predict and prevent future attacks. Furthermore, Artificial Intelligence is important in vulnerability management, as software and networks are constantly scanned for preventive measures before an attack.
Although the strengths of AI are vast, there exist skills or limitations on the side of AI that do not allow it to completely substitute human cybersecurity experts. For example, AI can identify anomalies, but does not always know the context in which these particular actions belong, hence the need for human judgment when identifying benign versus malicious anomalies. In addition, human expertise greatly excels in terms of creativity and problem-solving skills, which enables experts to tackle unforeseen attacks beyond the ability of AI systems. Again, AI systems do not make or implement ethical decisions or observe cybersecurity compliance rules on their own, but human observation is required. In addition, they can still be abused because of the ability of hackers to circumvent the system security used by AI.
The future of cybersecurity does not involve a fight between humans and AI. Instead, there is a collaboration called Humans + AI. The repetitive and resource-intensive tasks will be handled by AI in order for cybersecurity professionals to handle high-level tasks such as risk analysis, threat response, and ethical considerations. The collaboration will enable efficiency and accuracy, and improve the security posture.
Despite the rising use of AI, there is a looming shortage of experienced cybersecurity professionals. It is reported that there are millions of unfilled positions for cybersecurity experts around the globe. Examples even exist in developed countries such as the UK, whose shortage of skilled professionals exceeds the shortage of healthcare professionals. AI, therefore, becomes a supplement for this particular shortcoming.
AI systems are transforming the cybersecurity landscape by providing faster threat detection and response capabilities. The fact is, though, that AI systems cannot do what human cybersecurity experts bring to the table in terms of creativity, strategic planning, and ethical considerations. The coming years of cybersecurity, in fact, are expected to see an unparalleled level of human and AI synergy, where AI systems are utilised for doing repetitive work involving dealing with huge amounts of data, while human experts bring their intelligence, decision capabilities, and flexibility to the table.
